Jim's Story
Jim is an internationally recognised maritime archaeologist, historian, and author whose career spans five decades of underwater exploration. He has led or participated in shipwreck expeditions around the world and has served in several major leadership roles, including Director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum and Executive Director of the Institute of Nautical Archaeology.
He later became the Director of Maritime Heritage for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), where he oversaw national maritime-heritage programmes and contributed to some of the most significant archaeological investigations of the last century.

Throughout his career, Jim has been at the centre of landmark projects that captured global attention. He has been involved in expeditions to the RMS Titanic and USS Monitor, worked on the search for and identification of historic WWII wrecks, and contributed to studies of shipwrecks across the Pacific, Atlantic, and beyond. He has written more than 30 books, appeared in and presented numerous documentaries, and served as the Series Advisor for National Geographic’s Drain the Oceans, helping to bring cutting-edge archaeological discoveries to viewers all over the world. His ability to connect the technical with the human, to reveal the people behind the wrecks, is what makes his work so compelling.
